I have loved the poem 'The Wreck of the Hesperus' since I was twelve years old. I was introduced to it by my 7th grade teacher, Mrs. Sparacio, in New Jersey. The poem is about a stubborn ship captain who does not heed the advice of an experienced member of his crew.
I love this poem because it tells a story that is easy to imagine. We are taken along for the adventure and tragedy. You can almost hear the scornful laugh.
The poem takes place near the reef of Norman's Woe, which as a child, I assumed was in England but it turns out that it is off the coast of Massachusetts. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow is an American poet who published this, my favorite poem in 1842. I hope you enjoy it.
